Viva Vigan: Where the Spirit of Bigueños Never Die
It felt so lively… so warm…., yet so dull. I could hear music, the dancers swaying so freely with glee, the vendors prepping in opposite sides of the streets, the laughter of them all – but everything felt so distant. Well sucks to be me, it was all just a vision of mine.
Fiestas. When I think of one, I could imagine it so well.
There’s music all over, confetti here and there – it’s endless fun and joy
within the vicinity. I actually haven’t been in a fiesta nor watched one in
real life. I was looking forward to this year’s fiesta, but I already had a
feeling that it won’t be as I would expect it to be.
Every year in Vigan City, on January 25th the Vigan City fiesta is held and celebrated. I remember that it is also the feast day of St. Paul the Apostle’s conversion, whom is known to be the patron saint of Vigan City. At occasions like these, many people gather – families, friends, tourists and other people all over. But due to this pandemic, it put a lot of things at halt. I know this pandemic has been rough for everyone – yet Bigueños never give-up right? Despite such happenings, they still ought to spread positivity and joy. There may be no decorations and such in the streets, no dancing or parades – let us not let the tradition die. We can still celebrate, but not like before, although that’s better than nothing right? We should always remember to maintain the protocols at all times, correct? And hope for this pandemic to end.
